You asked for and now you have it, a tutorial for create realistic rendering with 3ds max and mental ray, this is a simple but effective tutorial for render nice interiors with mental ray.
For this render i used Daylight system and photometric lights with ies profiles, and Final Gather no Global Illumination in this case.
I will start showing the daylight system setup and position:
If you see i am using MrSun and Mr Sky for the exterior lighting
Inside i am using photometric lights, all the lights has the same setup:
What i like of mental ray that it works better with photometric lights, this is my personal opinion, and it is more easy to have a nice lighting with mental ray than vray, but i prefer vray because it is more fast.
I used Arch & Design Materials for the scene some custom and some presets, here the settings from some custom materials:
