This is a scene that I did for a presentation about exterior lighting, and I would like to share the making of this scene with you. The scene is available for download see more info at the end.
First about modeling for the structure was simply easy just boxes with the help of Edit Poly tools, the most difficult to create was the furniture used in the scene, I did it with the help of zbrush and photoshop and the trees and plants was made it with Speedtree and the the Ivy plugin.
The grass was a simple Vray displacement modifier with this texture for the displacement:
About materials I always use specular and bump map for all my textures, because this will help to the light to be absorb by the objects.
Lighting was done with vray sun and sky because it is the most faster rendering method for exterior images, here is an image of the settings and position:
And for having a good exposure I have used the vray physical camera, this is very important when working with vray sun because you will have more control of the lighting, check the settings:
And for render settings I used a more modest settings for having a more faster rendering, here is the render setup:
For post production I did a sky replacement, color correction, modified the exposure control, some offset, lens correction, chromatic aberration, some glow and sharpen.
Check the Final version
Also I have made it a night version that I would like to share with you

do you use the same render setup for the night scene?
thank you very much.. =)
July 19, 2012 at 6:03 pm
do not use vray sun for your night renderings? do you see the sun at night in real life? hehehe, use a vray dome light with a very dark blue. and the render setup is the same for day or night, the work is done with the vray ies and the vray dome with dark blue color
August 9, 2012 at 12:47 am
Thanks for the reply.. oouch, no wonder i can’t get the blueish effect.. haha

August 9, 2012 at 7:09 am

Hi Aleso,
thanks for the work you’re doing.
I’ve gone trought some of your tutorial and I have spotted that you often use a reinhard or exponential color mapping with the don’t affect color tick on. This will deliver a linear render anyway. What is the point of doing so if you save in 16 bit tiff instead of leaving it as linear? I mean you don’t really take advantage of the reinhard or exponential color mapping if you use don’t affect color. Moreover you’re clamping and saving in 16bit tiff so you can’t restore the highlights in post then.
Regards,
Giacomo.
July 26, 2012 at 9:11 am
Don’t affect color adaptation only – this is not necessary if you are using your 2.2 gamma correction in the gamma and lut setup inside 3ds max, that option is just for maintaining the linear color space for post-production or noise reduction, my 3ds max is working in a linear space.

August 13, 2012 at 9:54 pm
Thank you for your kind words, Alex
. I would recommend to anyone that wants to be able to make more high render settings and complex lighting to use minimum a i7-2600 with 8 gb of ram and it would be a good addition to have a gtx 460, you can build a decent setup with a budget of $1,000 to $1,500 usd, hope this help!
September 2, 2012 at 12:33 am

September 3, 2012 at 10:31 am
can you be more specific, please?
September 7, 2012 at 8:14 am
Hey Aleso.
I was wondering how much time you have useed for making such a render; modeling work, puting up the scene for render, rendertime, and postwork i PS? By the way it looks great what you have done, love watching your work.
Regards Daniel
September 13, 2012 at 3:22 pm
Daniel, normally it takes me 2 a 3 days from concept, modeling, textures, materials, lighting, rendering and post, what it takes more time is modeling and waiting for the render
