Daylight Dark Interior HDRI

Well i have some tutorial about how to get realistic rendering using HDRI, but in this case this will be the only lighting source, this is the more simple way to lighting a scene without lighting complication but getting a really great realistic feeling in your scene, i have to say that i love to render with HDRI and for that reason i want to share my workflow when using just HDRI lighting.

But i want to show to some details of the models, using poly modeling i create all the models and for detailing the sofa and the eames lounge chair i used zbrush.

First we need to find the perfect HDRI for our scene, i was thinking in a sunset mood for this scene and i am using like always a HDRI from OPENFOOTAGE and this is the one that i used:

hdri lighting

I used this HDRI with a Vray Dome light and this is the setup for the lighting:

Check the settings for the vray physical camera, this is a really important step because the camera control how the lighting will affect the scene:

And that’s all for the lighting now i want to share with you the rendering setup, for this one i used Brute Force and Light Cache for having a more accurate lighting calculation, this is the render setup:

The post-production was like always, some contrast, color correction, vignette and a little bit of chromatic aberration and some glow in the windows, i hope you like it this tutorial and check more images from this scene :)

This is the more easy way to achieve realistic rendering without breaking your head with lighting, just try to find a good hdri and you will have a nice rendering :)

  1. great output as always…..
can you please make one tutorial from 3dsmax render output to final result…
post production in details…..That’s your main KEY man….awesome…

    Thanks

    • i am thinking in making a more detailed post production tutorial, but i need a scene that i can show some post production techniques because in this type of render there is not a lot of post, but i have that in mind, thanks Vivek :)

      • can you post the original raw render & post production version both …
        Thanks…

        • i am afraid that i can’t, i have override the image :( the next one

  2. Thank Yuo! Great toturial!… but i have a question…didi you put glass [with glass material] in the window? Or its without the thin glass?

    • thanks Ricardo and yes i use glass the in the windows :)

  3. thanks for your best tutorial did you apply HDRI on environment?
I men on GI environment and reflection/refraction environment override ?
    thanks alot

    • no, i do not use the environment/reflection settings in the vray render setup because the vray dome override this parameters

  4. I want to buy scene i am using vray 2 and max 2012 is it possible to render this scene ?can i send you money from western union ?

    • the scene was made it with that softwares but i saved in a older format for the people that use older 3ds max version, and right now i just take payment via paypal, sorry for the inconvenients

  5. Wow , Nice result with Only one light source .

    • yes only one lighting source :)

  6. Hi Aleso,

    Great tutorial!
I was just wondering how long it takes you to render this scene, because i have tried to render mij own scene with these settings.
It gets rid of the terrible “dome noise” however it takes about 3 hours to render on a i7 12gb ram machine.
So if i even want to render an animation, it would take me about a year:P

Also, are you adjusting the strength of the hdri with the sRBG button on or off in frame buffer?

    Kind regards.

    • well if you are going to render an animation this is not the perfect settings for that, you need to save the irradiance map and light cache and reuse it, or any other methods hehe, and i am increasing the hdri via the output rollout

  7. thx for tut this can work in mental ray ?

    • yes it will work in mental ray :D

  8. Really great tutorial as usual.
What is the different between pre-filter and retrace threshold in Light cache ?

    • pre-filter is a reconstruction parameter if you turn on this, the samples in the light cache will be filtered before rendering, this will help to reduce the noise in the final render, and retrace threshold parameter is good to use because it will help to reduce light leaks due to the light cache interpolation.

  9. awesome…great tutorial, its very useful. will you please suggest that where can i get free hdri file?

    • you can get the same hdri that i use for my scenes in openfootage.net amazing site

  10. hi aleso thx for this great tutorial , just i have problem about dont effect color
you use gamma 2.2 and u activate dont effect color in color mapping .

what u fram Buffer is vray or Max , if vray do u activate SRgb obtion ? and what ur format output , cause i get black render
    Thanks

    • if you are working with gamma 2.2 in 3ds max it is not necessary to put the gamma in the render setup but if you do you have to check do not affect colors because if not you will have double gamma applied to your render, this is only good if you are planning to do some color correction because it maintain the render in a linear space, i just use the 3ds max render buffer

  11. Hi! thank you very much for the tutorial :)
but can you tell me how to make this carpet,it’s very nice ^^

    • thanks, i will try to make a tutorial about the carpet :)

  12. I am working on max 2012 and vray 2 is it possible for me to buy this scene?
